A method for monitoring physical network topology information and a device therefor are provided to independently monitor out-of-band channels supported by each port, so that each patch panel can determine port level connectivity, while a distributed structure variable in module size can be realized. An I-panel port controller transmits an outbound message on an out-of-band channel(S802), and decides whether an outbound message is receivable from another I-panel port controller(S804). If not(S806), the port controller checks the currently stored port state(S808). The port controller updates a port level data store so that a new port state can be shown as being 'separated', and generates a message which notifies of the separation of another panel port controller to send the message to the panel controller(S810). If the outbound message is receivable, the port controller receives the message(S812). If the stored port state shows the 'separated' state and received I-panel/port information is not identical with pre-stored I-panel/port information(S814), the port controller updates the port level data store, and updates newly received remote physical network topology information(S816). Another panel controller receives the updated message, and responds to the message to update panel-level information(S818).
