An optical rotary encoder in which a light quantity monitor signal is stabilized even if there is an error in assembling, adjustment, etc., which is small in size, and which has excellent detection accuracy. The optical rotary encoder has a rotating slit plate provided with a rotation angle detecting track having optical slits, a light source for irradiating light to the optical slits, light- receiving elements for rotation angle detection, provided corresponding to those positions of the optical slits to which the light from the light source is irradiated and receiving the light from the light source through the optical slits, and light-receiving elements for light quantity monitoring, provided at positions on a circle so as to correspond to those positions of the optical slits to which the light from the light source is irradiated. The angular width of a light- receiving element for light quantity monitoring is an integral multiple of the angular frequency of an intensity distribution of the light, from the light source through an optical slit, on the surface of the light- receiving element.
