A focus searching method of a high-density optical disk apparatus is provided to be capable of preventing an optical disk and an objective lens of an optical pickup from colliding with each other during a focus searching operation for searching a focus position as vertically lifting up/down the objective lens of the pickup for discriminating the optical disk and for deciding whether the disk is mounted. When a high-density optical disk apparatus is turned on, an objective lens of an optical pickup for a high-density optical disk is lifted up in a direction of the optical disk(S210,S220). It is decided whether an S-curve by a beam reflected from a surface of the disk is detected while the objective lens is lifted up(S230). If so, it is decided that the disk is mounted on the disk apparatus and an interruption threshold value is compared with a value of a swing counter for counting the operation for lifting up the objective lens(S250,S260). If the counting value of the counter is smaller than the threshold value, the operation for lifting up the objective lens is maintained until the counting value reaches the threshold value, and if the counting value reaches the threshold value, the operation for lifting up the objective lens is interrupted(S270,S280).
