A recording mode changing method in a digital recorder is provided to be capable of changing a recording mode for data streams received in real time, and of distinguishing/recognizing connective recording positions and recording modes so that reproducing processes corresponding to each recording mode are normally conducted. Data streams received in real time are encoded in one random recording mode, and are recorded on the first recording medium(S10). If the random recording mode is changed into another random recording mode during the recording, the data streams are temporarily stored on the second recording medium(S11-S13). When the changing into another recording mode is completed, the temporarily stored data streams and the data streams received in real time are encoded in the changed recording mode so that the encoded data streams are connectively recorded on the first recording medium while management information for accessing connective recording positions of the streams is generated and recorded(S14-S18).
