A position detecting apparatus and method are provided to reduce power consumption of a sensor in the position detecting apparatus by selectively turning on the sensor according an object's proximity. A position detecting apparatus includes a communication interface unit(200), a sensor(230), a sensor driving determining unit(210), a sensor driver(220), and a position detecting unit(240). The communication interface unit communicates with a moving object and receives signal from the moving object. The sensor determines the distance between the sensor and the moving object. The sensor driving determining unit determines whether the intensity of the received signal is higher than a reference value, and determines whether to drive the sensor, based on the determined result. The sensor driver selectively drives the sensor under the control of the sensor driving determining unit. The position detecting unit detects the position of the moving object by using the signal from the sensor and an output signal from the sensor driver.
