A method for updating data is provided to shorten time needed for updating the data to a memory by selecting a sector or chip erase mode according to the expected erase or update time of the data to be updated in case that the data such as a program is updated to a memory tool such as a flash memory. Update data is stored to the first memory(10). The erase mode is determined by comparing the expected update time using a partial data erase mode with the time using entire data erase mode in response to an update request for the partial data among the erase target data stored in the second memory(12). The partial or entire target data is erased according to the determined erase mode(14). The update data is stored to the second memory(16).
