A method for setting up background music from an MP3 function in a portable terminal is provided to set an MP3 audio data file as the background music by having a background music storage and a background music setting key so that a user can use the portable terminal as listening to MP3 audio data. A method for setting up background music from an MP3 function in a portable terminal comprises the following steps of: converting a mode into a background music mode and storing an MP3 audio data file, selected as background music, in a background music storage(S10,S30); amplifying a voice signal of the stored background music through an auxiliary amplifier, and outputting the amplified voice signal through a speaker of a voice processor(S60); releasing an MP3 mode and displaying a standby mode of the portable terminal so that a user can user the portable terminal as listening to the background music; and re-inputting a background music setting key in the background music mode, and releasing the set up background music(S90,S100).
