Involves using a delay unit to delay the adaptation if communication conditions of the channel are improving. A less robust mode with a higher intrinsic quality is then only selected after some delay. If channel conditions are not improving the adapting is not delayed. INDEPENDENT CLAIMs are included for a digital communications system and a delay unit.
