An apparatus and a method for controlling a microwave oven using a bar-code are provided to extend recognition range for recognizing the bar-code by preparing a bar-code scanner in an operation panel in order to scan the bar-code attached to a package of food conveniently. In an apparatus and a method for controlling a microwave oven using a bar-code, an operation panel(200) is prepared in the front of the microwave oven. A bar-code scanner(220) is embedded in the operation panel, and acquires bar-code information by projecting light to the bar-code attached to a package of food. A main control part controls cooking operation to cook food according to the bar-code information acquired by the bar-code scanner.
