The invention relates to the agriculture, in particular to the field of poultry farming, and can be used for selecting breeding traits of waterfowl inparticular, ducks, at breeding, cash and private farms. A method to select traits, while breeding ducks, is carried out on the basis of the entropic analysis and the organization level of a system of indices of weight and morphological traits of the eggs of the ducks at the beginning of productive period. A small diameter of the eggs is determined to be the most informative trait at the beginning of the productive period of the ducks and it can be used to increase the effectiveness of the breeding according to productive and reproducing qualities.
