Disclosed is a headrest (4) for a vehicle seat (1). In the event of an accident, at least one portion of the headrest facing the head (24) of the passenger who sits in the seat can be displaced from an operating position into a safety position towards the head of said passenger under the effect of a driving device (7). According to the invention, the driving device (7) comprises at least two parts (10, 13) which are movable towards each other under the effect of a first force. At least one (10) of said parts is provided with a slanted surface (11) that acts upon the other part (13) and is inclined in relation to the effective direction of the first force. Said slanted surface (11) makes it possible to generate a second force which is effective in a direction different from that of the first force and can be transmitted to the headrest (4), e.g. after releasing a locking mechanism (8).
