Class 94 (2) [Also in Group VIII] In an apparatus for the manufacture of flat bags or the like from heat sealable material, preferably transparent, the web of material 1 is drawn from a drum 4 over a guide roller 5 and through a tube former 6 by feed rollers 2, 3 the web being so folded that the edges 11, 12 remain at a distance a apart. A carriage supported on rollers 35 carries heat sealing members 33, 34, and is moved forward at the same speed as the web and returned quickly by means of a crank 38, lever 42, and connecting rod 43. During the forward movement of the carriage the members 33, 34, which are heated, come into contact with the web which is heat sealed along a number of strips 13, 14 whose spacing corresponds to the width of a bag, and during the return movement the parts 33, 34 move apart, the movement of the carriage being so adjusted that the succeeding group of heat sealed strips is formed at a distance corresponding to the width of a bag. Delivery rollers 18, 19 which are also cooling rollers, draw the web through the heat sealing station and cutters 15, 16 longitudinally cut the web at 17, and deliver it to transverse cutters 20, 21, which cut the web in the centre of the strips 13, 14, each cutting operation supplying two completed bags 24, 25 to the delivery table 26. At the open end of the bag the free edge of the rear wall extends beyond the free edge of the front wall to facilitate opening. |
