An apparatus and a method for authenticating a user of an image forming apparatus by using image file format information are provided to conveniently use an image forming apparatus exposed to a plurality of users without inputting a user ID and a password, and efficiently manage the image forming apparatus. A user connects an image storing device or downloads an image by using a personal computer in a state that image authentication is set(S410). A photoprinter receives an image for printing to analyse Exif(Exchangeable Image File format) information of the corresponding image(S420). The user gives a printing command to the photoprinter in a state that the Exif information of the corresponding image is analyzed(S430). The photoprinter compares whether the Exif information of the current image is equal to an image format condition set by the user(S440). If so, the photoprinter prints a page to be printed by the printing command(S450). If not, the photoprinter displays that a format of the image is not a format of a right user, and does not proceed with printing(S460).
