PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detachable safety stop device which detects an obstacle existing in the direction of running an electric wheelchair to stop its running and can restart it being accurately separated from the obstacle without requiring more labor and time. SOLUTION: The detachable safety stop device for an electric wheelchair enables the detachable mounting of the following individually: an acceleration sensor for detecting the inclination of a joystick indicating the direction of running selected out of a plurality of directions, an ultrasonic wave sensor for the non-contact detection of surrounding obstacles and a pressure sensitive rubber switch sensor for the contact detection of them and a safety stop control unit having a control means which permits running in directions other than the direction of the obstacle exists while forbidding it just in the direction.
