PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operating device capable of accurately detecting the opening and closing movements of a lid even if both a magnetic sensor and a magnet for detecting the opening and closing movements of the lid are provided in close proximity to the axis of rotation of the lid. SOLUTION: The operating device A includes the lid 2 rotatably mounted on an operating device body part 1, and the magnet MG 1 and the magnetic sensor S mounted on the operating device body part 1 and the lid 2 for detecting the opening and closing of the lid. The magnetic sensor S has directivity such that it is more excellent in the sensitivity to detect magnetic fields in particular directions N2, N2' than in other directions. With the rotation of the lid 2, either the magnetic sensor S or the magnet MG1 changes in attitude, so that when the lid 2 is closed the direction N1 or N1' of the magnetic field of the magnet MG 1 aligns with the particular directions N2, N2', and so that when the lid 2 is open the direction N1 or N1' of the magnetic field of the magnet MG1 does not align with the particular directions N2, N2'.
