PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently desulfurizing molten iron without using fluorine-based slag formation promoter, when the molten iron is desulfurized with desulfurizing agent mainly containing CaO by using a mechanical stirring type desulfurizing apparatus. SOLUTION: When the molten iron 3 is desulfurized with the desulfurizing agent mainly containing CaO by using the mechanical stirring type desulfurizing apparatus, oxygen gas concentration in the atmosphere gas in contact with the molten iron, is adjusted to≤3 vol% to perform the desulfurization. At this time, it is desirable that non-oxidizing gas or inert gas of≥0.3 Nm<SP>3</SP>/min×m<SP>2</SP>per stationary state molten iron surface area, is blown against the molten iron surface from a gas supplying piping 6, and the CaO-based desulfurizing agent does not substantially contain the fluorine.
