PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-soluble polymer having excellent hydrophilicity and also excellent in adsorption, dispersibility and safety, and which can be sufficiently prevented from the discoloration and which is suitable for use as a detergent additive, and its application, and to provide a method for producing the water-soluble polymer which can efficiently produce such a water-soluble polymer. SOLUTION: The water-soluble polymer is obtained by polymerizing a monomer component containing (A) a polyether compound and (B) N-vinyl pyrrolidone, in which the water-soluble polymer contains 0.01-0.3 parts by weight of (B) N-vinyl pyrrolidone, based on 1 part by weight of (A) the polyether compound.
