An agent comprising mandelic acid is provided to show excellent antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria without inhibiting the growth of Lactobacillus species, thereby being effectively used as an agent for treating vaginitis. The therapeutic agent for vaginitis comprises a mandelic acid represented by the formula(1). The vaginitis is induced by at least one bacteria selected from the group consisting of Bacillus cereus species, Enterococcus faecalis species, Escherichia coli species, Listeria monocytogenes species, Salmonella enteritidis species, Salmonella gallinarum species, Shigella sonnei species, Yersinia enterocolitica species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa species, and Staphylococcus aureus species.
