PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an abrasive favorably used in a surface processing method for a long work, capable of establishing an in-line system free of the risk of bringing about an environmental problem nor dropping the mechanical property of the work. SOLUTION: The abrasive is used in the surface processing method for long work in which the work is inserted penetrating in at least two flexible pipe members fed with the abrasive, pinched through the flexible pipe members with a force having the prescribed size applied from outside the flexible pipe members, and moved relative to the abrasive while the flexible pipe members are rotated relative to the work, wherein the abrasive consists of a soft abrasive material having grinding performance such as chaff, leaves of Aphananthe aspera, wood splinters, dried trunks of water rice stems, etc. or consists of a mixed grinding material formed from the mentioned soft abrasive and a hard abrasive.
