<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition for treating periodontal diseases and to provide a method for inducing periodontal membrane and to provide a polypeptide, a polynucleotide, a recombinant expression vector and a transformant each used for the method. <P>SOLUTION: Human ADAMTSL(disintegrin-like and metalloprotease domain with thrombospondin type I motifs-like) 4α protein, human ADAMTSL 4β protein, mouse ADAMTSL 4α protein and mouse ADAMTSL 4β protein are factors for controlling a periodontal membrane-regenerating step. The periodontal membrane can be induced by a composition containing these proteins, a composition containing a transformant in which a gene encoding these proteins is introduced or a recombinant expression vector containing the gene encoding these proteins.
