PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect skew feeding of documents carried by an image reading device and prevent damage of the documents and missing of read images. SOLUTION: These sheet carrying device and document reading device are provided with a means for detecting a main scanning direction end part (reading element 360, reading control part 28, end part position detecting part 281) detecting the main scanning direction end part position of documents carried for image reading, a plurality of times during carrying of the documents; a skew feeding amount detecting means (skew feeding amount detecting part 282, reading control part 28) detecting skew feeding amount based on the detected end part position; a skew feeding determination means (skew feeding amount detecting part 282) determining skew feeding based on the detected skew feeding amount; and a carrying stop means (reading control part 28, automatic feeder drive control part 280) stopping carrying of the documents when skew feeding is determined. The document skew feeding amount can be accurately detected, and stop of carrying can be appropriately performed based on the skew feeding amount. Detection of skew feeding amount can be smoothly and accurately performed even in long documents, and document damage and image missing caused by skew feeding are prevented by stop of carrying.
