An electric power steering device having a torque detector for detecting steering torque applied to a steering member and also having a brushless DC motor for steering assistance, and the electric power steering assists steering by conducting currents of a plurality of phases to the brushless DC motor based on the steering torque detected by the torque detector. The power steering device further has current detectors each detecting a current of each of the plurality of phases, a means for adding values of the currents detected by the current detectors, and a means for determining whether or not the result of the addition is within a predetermined range. When the determination means determines that the result of the addition is outside the predetermined range, the result is determined to be abnormal.
