<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device capable of reducing a very bright unpleasant light leaking from the light source lamp through an exhaust port and noise emitted to the outside of the apparatus, even when cooling efficiency and heat dissipation efficiency of a heat source, such as a light source lamp are raised, and the amount of light emitted from the light source lamp is increased. <P>SOLUTION: A light intercepting cup 12 that intercepts unnecessary light from the light source lamp 7 is disposed near the light source lamp 7. Consequently, very little unnecessary light reaches the user side from the exhaust port 9. Since the light intercepting cup 12 is not present near the exhaust fan 8, resistance to ventilation is low, and wind whistle caused from the exhaust fan 8, the exhaust port 9, etc., can be reduced. Further, low resistance to ventilation increases the amount of movement of air involved in ventilation, which raises the cooling efficiency and the heat dissipation efficiency.
