PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical waveguide having a large direction changing function for propagation light by using a reflection area composed of a gaseous clad inside the optical waveguide and by taking a large refractive index difference between a local core and clad. SOLUTION: The optical waveguide is provided with a waveguide core and a clad that surrounds the periphery of the waveguide core and that has a refractive index smaller than that of the waveguide core. The optical waveguide is characterized in that it has a vacancy inside the waveguide core and that it changes a part or all of the directions of the propagation light using as a reflection area a part or all of the boundary between the waveguide core and the vacancy.
