<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a small and new optical communication system operable with low power consumption, and also, strong against displacement between the light-emitting side and the light-receiving side by which a long communication distance is provided in the optical communication system, especially, in a percutaneous optical communication system. <P>SOLUTION: The percutaneous optical communication system is composed of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter is provided with: a modulation circuit for an electrical signal; a pulse-width adjustment circuit; and a light-emitting means for outputting an optical signal, whose pulse width is adjusted to a prescribed pulse width, after converting the electrical signal modulated by the modulation circuit to the optical signal. The receiver is provided with: a light-receiving means for converting the optical signal received from the light-emitting means to an electrical signal; and a demodulation circuit for the electrical signal.
