PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating method which can form, even under any work environment, an ultraviolet shielding coating or infrared shielding coating having excellent durability and abrasion resistance, hardly generates coating or color unevenness, and hardly generates patches, whitening, deficit, or cracks. SOLUTION: In the method, at least an ultraviolet shielding agent and/or an infrared shielding agent, a binder, and polyhydric alcohol solvent are compounded. A coating liquid compounded with 50-95 wt% polyhydric alcohol is applied to a substrate to be dried using a coater having a coating liquid discharge nozzle with a 0.5-3.0 mm bore diameter, further using a coater having a blower for generating an air curtain with a discharge pressure of the coating liquid discharge nozzle at 0.01-0.098 MPa, thereby forming the coating containing the ultraviolet shielding agent and/or infrared shielding agent on the surface of the substrate.
