PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element wherein alignment of a ferroelectric liquid crystal is controlled without generating an alignment defect and which is suitable for manufacture of a liquid crystal dropping system (One Drop Fill:ODF) and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element has a ferroelectric liquid crystal interposed between two substrates, electrode layers respectively formed on the facing surfaces of the two substrates, a plurality of linear partitions formed on the facing surface of one substrate, alignment layers respectively formed on the facing surface of the one substrate on which the electrode layer and the linear partitions are formed and the facing surface of the other substrate on which the electrode layer is formed and a frame-shaped seal member continuously formed between the two substrates so as to enclose an outer side of a display region defined by the linear partitions. The longitudinal direction of the linear partitions is nearly vertical to an alignment treatment direction of the alignment layers. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
