PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transparent or translucent liquid softener composition developing no turbidity even under long-term storage at low temperatures (lower than 0°C) and good in softening ability and water absorption. SOLUTION: The transparent or translucent liquid softener composition contains (a) 5-30 mass% of a compound of general formula (1): R<SP>11</SP>R<SP>12</SP>R<SP>13</SP>R<SP>14</SP>N<SP>+</SP>X<SP>-</SP>(wherein, R<SP>11</SP>, R<SP>12</SP>and R<SP>13</SP>are each a 14-26C saturated hydrocarbon group or an unsaturated hydrocarbon group having one or more double bonds which is divided via an ester group into parts, or a 1-3C alkyl or the like, wherein based on the total number of moles of the above saturated hydrocarbon groups and the unsaturated hydrocarbon groups, the proportion of the saturated hydrocarbon groups is 0.1-12%, and the proportion of the unsaturated hydrocarbon groups is 75-90% with the cis/trans ratio being (85:15) to (99.9:0.1), the proportion of the unsaturated hydrocarbon groups each having two or more double bonds is 5-15%, and the proportion of the saturated hydrocarbons derived from≥18C saturated fatty acids is 0.1-5%; R<SP>14</SP>is H, a 1-3C alkyl or the like; and X<SP>-</SP>is an anionic group) and (b) 5-30 mass% of an organic solvent with log P being -0.5 to 1.5.
