A recording parameter is set at a high speed and easily. A recording/reproducing device is provided for writing and reading data expressed by combinations of mark lengths and spaces formed on a recording medium. The recording/reproducing device is provided with an edge shift detector (24) for measuring an edge shift quantity of the mark formed on the recording medium by using a data signal for every pair of the mark length and the space length. The recording/reproducing device is also provided with a function of setting the recording parameter for each pair of the mark length and the space length, based on the measured edge shift quantity.
