PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet material identification device capable of easily performing the adjustment or the change when a failure occurs. SOLUTION: A failure detection means 104 detects at least one failure of an impact application unit 102 and a detection unit 103 based on the electric signal output from the detection unit 103 when applying the impact directly to the detection unit 103 by the impact application unit 102. When the failure detection means 104 detects at least one failure of the impact application unit 102 and the detection unit 103, a determination unit 108 determines a part of at least one trouble of the impact application unit 102 and the detection unit 103 based on the pattern of the electric signal output from the detection unit 103 and the determination pattern of the electric signal stored in advance by directly applying the impact to the detection unit 103 at least for the predetermined time or the predetermined times.
