PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an X-ray imaging method and apparatus which enable the displaying of differential phase images of X rays transmitting an object with a lower exposure dose without required adjustment by building an optical system with a precision of below the wavelength of the X rays. SOLUTION: The apparatus is provided with an X-ray source 1 which emits coherent beam-like X rays 2, an X-ray imaging device 4 which measures the intensity distribution of the X rays 2 in a plane orthogonal to the optical axis of the X rays at a plurality of positions along the optical axis after transmitting the object 3, a phase difference arithmetic device 5 for computing the phase distribution of the X rays from the intensity distribution and an image display device 6 for displaying an image of the object by the phase distribution.
