PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) fiber generating a little amount of volatile components at heating and melting, and having excellent properties such as strength, and melt-spinnability (that is, containing a little amount of the volatile components after being formed into a fiber to reduce the staining and corrosion of an apparatus at drying, hot pressing or the like in an after-processing process, reducing the number of breakage of a yarn per unit time at melt spinning, and hardly causing the increase of a pack pressure); and to provide a method for producing the fiber. SOLUTION: The PPS fiber having≥3.5 and≤4.0 Mw/Mn (Mw is a weight average molecular weight; and Mn is a number average molecular weight) in the molecular weight distribution, leaving≤3.0 wt.% residue after being dissolved in 1-chloronaphthalene, providing a reduced amount of the volatile components at heating and melting, having excellent melt spinnability, a reduced amount of the generated volatile components after fiberization, and excellent yarn strength is obtained by subjecting a PPS having a spinnable viscosity to a thermal oxidation treatment at a comparatively light degree.
