The mechanism has two swivel arms (26, 28) supported at a chassis (12) of a vehicle and pivotable by a tailgate (14) of the vehicle. A slide rail (30) moves the tailgate in the swivel arms during swiveling by the swivel arms and the slide rail, and is fastened at the tailgate. A rotation axis of the arms is aligned in the direction of a vertical axis of the vehicle. The arms are flexibly coupled with the tailgate and the chassis. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a tailgate for a vehicle having a tailgate mechanism (2) a vehicle roof having a tailgate mechanism (3) a vehicle e.g. passenger car, with a tailgate and/or vehicle roof.
