The method involves connecting output shafts of engines of lifting unit with an input side of a transmission (6), and connecting the input side with a rope drum. The unit is slowed down or stopped by a set of brakes (11, 11`, 14, 14`), and each of the brakes is individually tested by driving the engines against braking force. The force is tested depending on a defined engine output during halt and/or rotating movement of the engines.
