The method involves detecting force components by load cells fixed at the rail, where the cells respond to a shear stress developed by the force components in the rail. Force sensors (20, 22) are horizontally embedded in a head (2) of the rail, where output signals of the sensors are supplied to an evaluator (50). The sensors are arranged with respect of the vertical and horizontal force components in a curved neutral line of the head. An independent claim is also included for a device for implementing a method for detecting the force effect on a rail by a wheel of a rail vehicle.
