PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a memory controller compatible with a new flash memory, a flash memory system provided with the memory controller, and a method for controlling the flash memory. SOLUTION: Type identification information for specifying the type of the flash memory is acquired from the flash memory and whether or not device information corresponding to the type identification information is stored in a first read-only device information storage means is discriminated. When it is discriminated that the device information is not stored, whether or not the device information corresponding to the type identification information is stored in a second rewritable device information storage means is discriminated. When it is discriminated that the device information corresponding to the type identification information is stored in the first or second device information storage means, the device information is acquired and set in an interface means for accessing the flash memory.
