PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which has high surface recording density, high dimensional stability even under high temperature and high humidity and high mechanical strength and whose error rate can be lowered. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium, a water vapor shielding layer and a magnetic layer are provided in this order on at least one surface of a non-magnetic supporting body, both Young's moduli in the longitudinal and width directions of the non-magnetic supporting body are 7 GPa or more, the magnetic layer includes ferromagnetic hexagonal ferrite powder having 5 to 40 nm average plate diameter or ferromagnetic metal powder having 20 to 100 nm average major axis length and a binder and a laminated body comprising the non-magnetic supporting body and the water vapor shielding layer has 0.001 to 0.3 g/m<SP>2</SP>-24hr water vapor permeability.
