PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a program failure monitoring method and a program failure monitoring device that can make an accurate recovery from an execution failure of a program while maintaining high maintainability of the program. SOLUTION: The start processing of a sequential processing program comprising a series of tasks sequentially processed by a program execution part 10 of a microcomputer 1 triggers the generation of periodic interrupts at time intervals shorter than a timeout time of a watchdog timer, and the end processing of the sequential processing program stops the generation of periodic interrupts. A watchdog signal WDC is varied (inverted in logical level) according to the periodic interrupts. If the periodic interrupts are generated beyond the time when the execution of the sequential processing program is expected to be completed, the subsequent generation of periodic interrupts is disabled to disable the subsequent variations in the watchdog signal WDC.
