PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coated cermet cutting tool whose hard coating layer exhibits excellent wear resistance in high-speed cutting. SOLUTION: This coated cermet cutting tool is constructed by forming the hard coating layer on the surface of a tool base by vapor deposition. The hard coating layer is composed of (a) a lower layer, which is a Ti compound layer having the total average layer thickness ranging from 3 to 20μm and (b) an upper layer, which is composed of a first unit layer and a second unit layer of an alternately stacking structure having the total average layer thickness ranging from 6 to 30μm. The first unit layer is constructed by a depositionα-type Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>layer, and the second unit layer is constructed by a Ti compound layer. The alternately stacking structure is constructed by alternately stacking the first unit layer and the second unit layer respectively having the average layer thickness ranging from 1.5 to 5μm in four or more layers.
