The inflator has combustion chambers (31, 35) separated from one another by a combustion chamber-cup unit (41) that is arranged in housing (11). An igniter (25) and a gas generating unit are arranged in the unit, where a peripheral surface of the unit has a fragile section. The surface is broken in the fragile section during activation of the igniter. A discharge channel is formed for the gas that is generated in the chamber (35).
