The machine has a brushless exciter (25) with a rotor (16) that is driven by a rotor of the machine and a stator (17) that cooperates with the rotor (16). The exciter is cooled through a gaseous cooling medium e.g. air, by using a separate cooling circuit. A separate fan (12) is provided for the circulation of the gaseous cooling medium in the cooling circuit of the exciter. The exciter is arranged behind the rotor of the machine in an axial direction.
