The autobus (21) capable of transport of more than fifteen people has an engine (23) installed longitudinally near the front of the vehicle, rear wheels and transmission between engine and rear wheels which comprises a gearbox (25) with input shaft (35) connected to the engine output shaft. The gearbox has an output shaft (26) connected to the remaining part of the transmission. The output shaft of the gear box is at least 5 cm lower than the input shaft of the gearbox, or even 15 cm lower. The output shaft of the gearbox is coupled with a further shaft which at least in part extends straightly downwards. The gearbox extends in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle by at most 41 cm. The gearbox is of the continuously variabel transmission type.
