In a stopped state of an engine, a nozzle vane (10) of a variable nozzle system (7) of a turbocharger (4) is displaced until it abuts on a stopper at a closing side. The position at which the nozzle vane (10) abuts on the stopper is set as a reference position based on which the nozzle vane (10) is displaced upon subsequent start-up of the engine.
