A method for controlling a motion of an avatar of a mobile terminal and the mobile terminal are provided to allow an avatar to perform various operations in synchronization with a motion of a user. A camera(190) captures an image of a subject. A memory(110) stores an avatar to be displayed on a screen and a motion change value of the subject obtained for setting a motion operation of the avatar. A controller(120) obtains a motion change value of the subject from an image of the subject captured by the camera(190), and controls the operation of the avatar to be displayed on the screen according to the obtained motion change value.
