<p>Various methods for generating one- dimensional GUI signals from two-dimensional mouse movements are described. The methods can be modal, allowing the mouse to be used for both two-dimensional and one-dimensional tasks. Within a single one- dimensional modal invocation, unbounded signals of either polarity can be produced while remaining within a bounded two-dimensional area and without leaving the pointing surface. The magnitude of generated one- dimensional signals is proportional to the two-dimensional distance traveled by the mouse.</p> |
