The method involves comparing a metrological determined state variable with a computed value of a state variable. The difference between the variable and the value is determined. Auxiliary signals that are generated within a monitoring structure is supplied to a controller (3) that regulates and/or controls a system e.g. internal combustion engine, using input signals (e) by control signals (u) supplied as input signals to the structure.
