The invention relates to a combustion recess (4) in the head (1) of a piston (2) for a diesel engine, said piston being provided with a cooling duct (9) optionally existing in the form of a cooled ring carrier (7). This combustion recess has, in the radially outer edge area, an undercut (8) which is formed such that the radially outer delimitation of the combustion recess (4) is situated sufficiently near the cooling duct (9) so that the cooling duct (9) has a cooling effect upon the combustion recess (4).
