Classes 51 (1) and 51 (2) In a high pressure gas producer having rotary water-cooled stirring arms, coking coal from a charging lock 4 collects in a water-jacketed fuel hopper closed by a rotary base plate 7 carrying a discharge shoot 21, a large part-conical hub 14 formed with stirring arms 15 and 16 and a scraper arm 18 preventing incrustation in the coking zone or the water-jacketed shell 2 of the producer. The upper surface of the stirring arms is convex displacing the coal upwardly, Fig. 2 (not shown), and prongs 17 may be fitted near the hub where the linear speed of the arms is low. The base plate 7 and hub 14 are carried by a hollow shaft 11 mounted in bearings 12 and 13 and a centrally disposed water supply pipe 20 extends into the hub, water being removed by an upper concentric pipe 19. The fuel bed is supported by a rotary grate 27 and an annular plate 29 secured to the shell 2, ash discharged by scrapers 32 on the grate passing through an outlet 5 leading to a discharge lock 28.
