An operation mode switching method in a portable terminal is provided to prevent a folder, when it rotates in a capturing mode or a video phone call mode, from hiding a camera by offering an operation control mode such that meaningless black image data is not displayed or captured. An operation mode switching method in a portable terminal comprises the following several steps. If a folder rotates in a capturing mode, the portable terminal senses a rotational direction of the folder(207). If the sensed rotational direction of the folder is for switching to a capturing termination mode, the portable terminal checks whether the camera is exposed(208). If not, the portable terminal switches to the capturing termination mode(209). If so, the portable terminal maintains a current capturing mode.
