The system has a separation enclosure (9) including hydrogen and oxygen separation membranes (27, 28) separating hydrogen and oxygen from a residual gas supplied via conduits (13, 29), respectively. A set of burners (3) allows a combustion reaction of the hydrogen and oxygen. A condenser (32) condenses water vapor resulting from the combustion reaction, and a pump (35) circulates the condensed water. An independent claim is also included for a method for the auxiliary production of water for a fuel cell system.
